The biggest thing that struck Mike N., Senior Vice President of European Operations, when he moved to Europe in 2006 was that each country in which Enterprise operates has its own culture and unique way of doing things.

Mike quickly adapted while always looking to the future. Here, Mike shares his thoughts on priorities, opportunities and people.

What excites you about the future of our operations in Europe?

The focus on our people. It’s important to develop and retain our team internally, as well as attract the best and brightest external candidates to join our team.

Investing in people is an important aspect of Enterprise’s culture. Can you share some examples of how you continue to make this a priority in Europe?

We will always be a people business, which is why attracting, developing and creating opportunities for our employees is fundamental to our success. Getting the right people in place and developing them is at the top of my list.

Our Management Training Programme will always be our pipeline to our leadership roles and continues to expand to all the countries where we do business. Similarly, we are recognized as an employer of choice and have strong diversity programmes in the U.K. and Ireland.

As the transportation industry – and thus, the business – evolves, what advice would you give employees as they navigate their careers at Enterprise?

The market is evolving with new technologies and business models, which means in five years we will be recruiting for different opportunities across the business. Its an exciting evolution with a lot of potential ahead.

I think about my own Enterprise journey, which took me from San Diego, to New York and London. I’ve been incredibly lucky to receive support and encouragement from some great people. Although it may have seemed scary at the time, each move enabled me to explore new opportunities and make new discoveries. Moving to new places has been key to my success and each time I have moved, I have grown six-fold. It has allowed me to understand my strengths and weaknesses and grow both professionally and personally.

My advice for people building their careers would be to surround yourself with great people and don’t be afraid to take on a new challenge. The more people and operations you work with, the better you become.
