In our ongoing series of “Five Question” blogs, we recently sat down with Jane H., Senior Vice President of Southeast Operations, to chat about her thoughts on leadership, her new role, and what advice she has to share from her 30 year career at Enterprise.

You recently became Senior Vice President of Southeast Operations. What excites you about this opportunity and what are you looking forward to in your new role?

It’s always refreshing to take on new responsibilities and learn a new business environment. I will certainly miss all the great folks I got to work with in my previous role. With the move, I will now get to know an additional set of fantastic people. Also this is the first time I will be working with a large contingent of international travelers. So now I have the opportunity to explore a new channel of business.

What is a day in the life of a Senior Vice President like? 

I spend my days thinking through new projects, opportunities and challenges. I also work as part of a team on more strategic opportunities, trying to help stretch our business in new directions. On some days I get the opportunity to represent the company to large customers or groups of Enterprise Holdings employees. There is always something new to tackle, which keeps this position fun and exciting.

What are your thoughts on leadership and what advice would you give to new managers?

I would encourage new managers to set high, record-breaking goals for themselves and their operations. Bringing an extra bit of energy and urgency to work every day is what helps people stand out in their career. As a part of that, work closely with your team to identify the smaller steps you need to achieve in order to reach the larger goal. From there, relentlessly train and develop yourself and the team on the processes needed to hit each step. I believe being able to transfer your skills to other people is one of the key pieces of great leaders.

Next year you will celebrate 30 years with Enterprise Holdings. How would you sum up your career to date?

The first thing that occurs to me is just how grateful I am to be a part of the Enterprise Holdings family. It’s a rare opportunity to work for a family-owned business and a family that reinvests in all of our futures. Another thought that leaps to mind is just how much fun this trip has been for 30 years. What a treat it has been to do my life’s work with such fun, smart, talented people.

What is something people may not know about you?

I am really a pretty open book. One of my fun facts is that when I started I didn’t have much money, and I also only had one suit (my interview suit). I quickly realized I was going to need to expand my wardrobe, which is hard to do when your budget it super tight. With a “can do” attitude, my roommate and I rented a sewing machine and made a few suits. Truly, where there’s a will there’s a way.
